Why Connection Comes Before Change
Body:
When a child is struggling, it’s natural to want the behavior to change quickly.
To correct.
To guide.
To help them do something differently.
But before change can happen, something else needs to come first.
Connection.
Children need to feel safe before they can shift behavior.
When a child feels overwhelmed, their nervous system is activated.
In that state, logic doesn’t land.
What helps is presence.
A calm voice.
A steady response.
A sense that someone understands what they’re feeling.
Connection makes it easier for children to stay open, engaged, and ready to learn.
When children feel understood, they become more open.
More flexible.
More able to move through what they’re experiencing.
In play therapy, connection is the starting place.
Because when a child feels safe, change doesn’t have to be forced.
It begins to happen naturally.
